Preparatory programmes Academy of Music Arnhem - Arnhem

Young Talent Class Arnhem

Do you have exceptional musical talent and are you in primary school or secondary education? Then the Young Talent Class offers you a wonderful opportunity to develop your skills further.

The programme is intended for:

  • children aged 10 and above (upper primary years);
  • secondary-school pupils up to and including the (pre-)final exam year of havo or vwo;
  • pupils from year 3 of vmbo-t;
  • and students in the final year of mbo-4b.

You can apply for the Jazz & Pop or Classical Music pathways.

Want to join? Here's how it works

First, you take an introductory lesson at the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Arnhem. This lesson is given by a lecturer from the programme. After the lesson, you will hear whether you are invited for an admission audition.

After your audition

Have you been admitted? Then you will enter the Young Talent Class. You will follow main subject lessons (on your instrument or in voice) and theory lessons. You will also perform regularly for an audience during student performance evenings. In addition, you take part in the Werkdagen for all preparatory-programme students. During these days, you collaborate with other young musicians and take part in various workshops.

Competitions and coaching

Would you like to participate in music competitions? The lecturers of the conservatory can support you in preparing for them.

Application and admission

For the Young Talent Class, you first complete an admission procedure, which includes the following tasks:

  • Ear-training test: singing back a given pitch;
  • Singing back a melody;
  • Clapping back a rhythm;
  • Identifying how many notes sound simultaneously;
  • Working with notation. For example, you will see a melody and then hear a slightly altered version. You will be asked to identify where the change occurs. You may also be asked to perform simple rhythmic patterns at sight.

You do not need to prepare anything for this test.

One important point: you should be able to read music to some extent. If you cannot yet read music, you must teach yourself before the test, possibly with support from your teacher. There are also differences between the admission requirements for Jazz & Pop and Classical Music.

Apply before 1 May. Applications received after 1 May will only be considered if sufficient places are still available.

Specific admission requirements

You perform three pieces that differ in character and tempo, including at least 1 étude and 2 recital pieces.

Specific admission requirements – Classical Music (Voice):

  • You have a good, accurate singing voice that is naturally still developing — just like you.
  • Ideally, you can already read music well and play an instrument.
  • You are able to communicate clearly and express your own story.
  • You sing repertoire that suits your age and experience.
  • You perform in 3 different languages.

For the solo audition, you prepare 3 pieces of your choice (including 1 piece with a band). These pieces must differ in character and tempo. Before the audition, you take a trial lesson. After the trial lesson, we determine whether you can proceed to a full audition.

Costs

The costs for participating in the Young Talent Class are:

  • 30 main subject lessons of 50 minutes and 25 theory lessons of 60 minutes per year, plus band coaching (Jazz & Pop) or accompaniment lessons (Classical Music):
    €1,590

Please note: you cannot apply for student finance for the Young Talent Class.
