The Structural Engineering preparatory programme prepares you well for the ArtEZ master's programme in Architecture. You will strengthen your technical foundation and learn to connect design with the building process, increasing your chances of admission to the master’s programme.
Classes take place on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, allowing you to combine this programme with a job or another study programme.
You will translate designs into executable plans, working on realistic assignments. You will also gain insight into construction, building technology and building physics.
Architects and structural engineers will share their current knowledge and experience, offering direct guidance from professional practice.
During the Pre-master in Structural Engineering, you will:
In this preparatory programme, you will learn to elaborate a design from a technical perspective.
In the first semester, you will attend lectures on construction and building physics. You will work on short technical design assignments and take a computer-aided design course. You will also visit construction sites to experience the professional field up close.
In the second semester, you bring everything together. You will create a complete design, including architectural detailing and technical elaboration.
The starting point is the renovation of an existing building for a fictional client. This project forms the basis for analysing the building, its surroundings and its technical elaboration.
First, you will create a design, then you will work out its technical implications, guided by an architect and a structural engineer.
Lecturers: Rudi Koster and Vincent Zevenhuizen
This course offers insight into the physical aspects of buildings and their role in the design process. You will develop a basic understanding of thermal, moisture-related and acoustic properties.
This knowledge enables you to communicate effectively with specialists in building physics, sustainability and installations.
In Construction, you will develop structural skills and learn to link them to your design knowledge. You will learn to recognise opportunities and communicate effectively with structural engineers.
A strong preparation
This preparatory programme will prepare you thoroughly for the admission process to the Architecture master's programme. It will also help you discover whether this field truly suits you, or whether another direction might align better with your ambitions.
