The future of the field of graphic design is closely linked to the work and positioning of its practitioners. Graphic designers shape the context of their own independent design practice – and thereby, collectively, that of the wider profession.
Through their work, designers participate in an ongoing conversation that defines their field: a dialogue between people from different disciplines and backgrounds, each contributing in their own way. The ideas and topics that participants bring into the programme are expressed in autonomous work, client assignments or educational projects. Almost all graduates of Werkplaats Typografie develop a practice that combines all three elements. They operate across disciplines, moving between different fields and navigating the edges of the professional domain – without losing sight of their core artistic and conceptual interests.
This master’s programme encourages participants to take full responsibility for their individual paths as well as for group projects. Werkplaats Typografie offers a home base – one that each student develops into the studio of their future. This distinctive way of working helps participants become aware of the artistic, cultural, social, political and economic contexts they wish to work within, challenge, reflect on or contribute to through their design practice.
