Education in Arts - part-time - Master - Zwolle

The Education in Arts programme's vision

The Education in Arts programme offers new ways of thinking and acting that will help you navigate the complexity of today’s world and the uncertainty of tomorrow. Engaging with "the other" and "the unknown" is part of the artist educator’s area of expertise. With imagination and creativity as their guides, artist educators thrive at the forefront of a complex and diverse society – one that demands experimentation, critical reflection and innovative ways of communicating.

Interdisciplinary learning community

The Master of Education in Arts's curriculum is interdisciplinary. This means you will be part of a diverse learning community that brings together a wide range of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Your starting point within the programme will be your personal research question. The curriculum develops from learning goals you will establish alongside your fellow students and teachers. As an artist educator, you stand with one foot in the future, expanding the boundaries between disciplines, systems, and research approaches.

I always enjoy exchanging ideas with students, friends, family, and colleagues. What are their experiences, and how do they view the topic? It’s easy to stay within your own bubble – but you don’t learn or grow that way.

Theory and practice: a golden combination

The Master of Education in Arts views theory and practice not as separate elements but as an integrated whole: the two are permanently interconnected and form the core of the curriculum. A central notion in this is praxis. The theoretical knowledge you gain will strengthen your professional practice and support your role as an artist educator – and vice versa. Where theory and practice meet, you will shape your own vision and keep refining your perspective.

A continuous process of talking, creating, writing and doing

During the Master of Education in Arts, you are constantly engaging in dialogue – whether with others or with yourself. Visions are not set in stone; there is no single right answer. Through continuous reflection, creation and research, you will define your position and find the right words for what you want to do through trial and error. Step by step, and with growing confidence, you will shape your position, explaining and reflecting on where you stand and why you act as you do.
