Pioneering is at the heart of the Master’s in Architecture. It means learning by doing, dealing with and learning from the unexpected, and allowing intuitive experimentation to inform the design process. It is an essential skill for any designer, the ability to find solutions without being fully prepared.
Pioneering also defines the annual Plein workshop programme, held each January. The themes are related to architecture, but do not necessarily focus on design. The workshops explore the boundaries of architecture - and go beyond them.
In recent years, Plein programmes have centred on the themes of proprioception and the posthuman. Between 2025 and 2027, the theme will be commons. Commons are shared places, spaces or resources, but they can also be shared histories or designs. The concept of the commons adds a new dimension to the relationship between architecture and society.
