In the first study year (September-July), you will follow the regular curriculum of the two-year shortened part-time Bachelor of Fine Art and Design in Education in Arnhem. During this period, you will introduce others to art and design – including people for whom this may not be self-evident. You will inspire them to create, support them in developing their talents, and connect your teaching with personal and social questions. You will let them experience what art can bring about and what it feels like to express what truly matters to them. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 09:15 to 16:30. Internships can take place during these days and are arranged through the internship office.
Subjects
The curriculum consists of a core programme of theoretical and educational subjects taught in study groups. These include learning psychology and pedagogy, developmental psychology, didactics, art and cultural history, current affairs, photography, art theory, philosophy, and research skills. You will gain knowledge about learning processes, special target groups and social psychology, as well as about developing lessons, teaching materials, and methods. You will also begin your first teaching internship.
In the first six months of year 2 (November-February), you will follow subjects from the Bachelor of Fine Art and Design in Education tailored programme on Tuesdays and Fridays. Subjects during this period include Social Psychology and Culture, Didactics of Art Theory, and Philosophy. You will also start keeping a learning log, hold tutorial meetings with a lecturer from the Master of Education in Arts, and write your bachelor’s thesis in the form of an essay.
Once your theoretical research at the bachelor’s level has been successfully completed and you receive approval to continue, you will move on to the Master of Education in Arts in the second half of the year, starting with Module 3. Classes take place every Monday in Zwolle.
Module 3
In this module, you will further develop your role as an artist educator and agent of change by designing and carrying out a research project aimed at transformation. You will develop a Research Project Plan (RPP) in collaboration with other research partners and experiment with various arts-based and action-oriented research methods. Alongside designing a research project, you will also create and partly carry out artistic-educational interventions. You will practise visual reflection techniques, including the use of film, and develop project-management and interdisciplinary-collaboration skills.
In the third year (September-June), you will follow the regular curriculum of the Master of Education in Arts.
Module 4
In this module, you continue the arts-based research started in Module 3, exploring a range of qualitative research methodologies in greater depth. You will document your artistic-educational research and its outcomes in a medium of your choice, reflecting critically on the process, results and insights gained. Module 4 prepares you for graduation: the knowledge, methods and skills you acquire in this phase refine your personal and professional identity as an artist educator with a distinctive voice. During this module, you will also present your research results to representatives from the professional field.
Modules 5 & 6: Motivated interventions in practice
In Modules 5 and 6, the focus returns to your personal research question. In your own professional environment, you will carry out an artistic-educational research project that forms the conclusion of your studies – and at the same time, the starting point for everything that follows. The skills and insights you acquire during the master’s will continue to inform your daily practice, along with the open and investigative mindset you have developed.
In this final phase, the emphasis lies on arts-based research: you will combine different research methods to explore a question from multiple perspectives. By approaching your topic from different angles, you will combine the best of both worlds – often leading to unexpected and valuable results.
