Tailor-Made Music in Education - Bachelor - Enschede

What will you learn?

Please note: this programme is being discontinued and no new students are being admitted. However, you can still take the Tailor-Made Music in Education programme at the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle.

At the Tailor-Made Music in Education programme at the Academy of Music in Enschede, we have one clear ambition: to train the very best music teachers. As a music teacher, you play music yourself, you have a solid knowledge of music and you know how to convey that knowledge to a group. It may be that you already have one of these skills thanks to your previous education. The skills you are still missing you will develop in the Docent Muziek op Maat programme through an abridged track with one teaching day per week on Mondays:

  • Do you have a diploma from the former AMV teacher training programme in higher professional education (HBO)? Then you can complete this programme in 6 months.
  • Do you have a bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Therapy? Then you complete this programme in 2 years.
  • Do you have or are about to have a PABO diploma (primary teacher training) or a bachelor’s degree from another teacher training programme? Then you complete this programme in 3 years.

After completing the programme, you obtain a first-level teaching qualification. This qualifies you to work in mainstream education and beyond, for example at a music school or in the educational department of an orchestra, ensemble or opera company.

ArtEZ also offers the Tailor-Made Music in Education programme at the Academy of Music in Zwolle (classes  are on Wednesdays). The 6-month AMV variant is only available in Enschede.

Three variants

The Tailor-Made Music in Education programme at the Academy of Music in Enschede is an abridged version of the four-year bachelor’s programme Docent Muziek (Music in Education). There are three variants, which differ in duration and curriculum. You can find the full curriculum of the four-year Music in Education bachelor’s programme on the main Docent Muziek page.

New: 6-month track for graduates of the former AMV teacher training programme

This variant is specifically for students who completed the former AMV teacher training programme and therefore already hold a second-level teaching qualification. To obtain the first-level teaching qualification in Music (Docent Muziek), you complete the following three components in six months:

  • Major subject: upper grades of secondary education, Music (16 contact hours)
  • Teaching practice: upper grades of secondary education, Music (minimum of 20 teaching hours)
  • You complete the programme with a self-designed graduation project.

2-year track with a bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Therapy

This variant is specifically for students who already possess the musical skills and knowledge. Here, the emphasis is on teaching, with a strong focus on methodology and didactics. You follow the same curriculum as the four-year bachelor’s programme in Music in Education, but with exemptions for, among other things, your main instrument and theoretical music subjects.

Your programme includes:

  • Major subjects for primary education, secondary education and Cultural and Artistic Education (CKV)
  • Teacher-training subjects such as Pedagogy, Psychology and Educational Science
  • Core music subjects such as Piano Accompaniment and Voice
  • Four teaching placements (primary education; lower and upper grades of secondary education; CKV)
  • Participation in projects from the four-year bachelor’s programme, such as the study trip and music production projects
  • You complete the programme with a self-initiated graduation project.

3-year track with a (nearly completed) PABO diploma or another teacher training bachelor’s degree

In this variant, the emphasis is on music-making and music theory. You follow the same curriculum as the four-year bachelor’s programme in Music in Education, but with exemptions for many of the didactic subjects. Your abridged programme looks like this:

  • You take lessons in your own musical principal study and follow all theoretical music subjects
  • You complete four teaching placements (primary education; lower and upper grades of secondary education; CKV)
  • You participate in the projects of the four-year bachelor’s programme, such as the study trip and music production projects
  • You complete the programme with a self-initiated graduation project.
