Why Product Design?

50+ years of Dutch design

For over fifty years, Product Design Arnhem has educated designers who challenge conventions and redefine material culture across furniture, products, accessories, footwear, and experimental forms. We helped define Dutch Design's reputation for experimentation, craftsmanship, and critical reflection.

Making is discovering

Designing is exploring. We learn through making - not to carry out ideas, but to uncover them. Materials aren't passive mediums but active collaborators. Through playful exploration, you think with your hands, creating things you couldn’t have imagined before.

Three connected domains

You develop a range of approaches through three interconnected domains:

  • Craft and Industry explores material innovation from traditional craftsmanship to advanced manufacturing.
  • Social and Public treats design as a catalyst for connection. You work with communities to address real-world challenges.
  • Critical and Discursive uses design as research. Through speculative approaches, you explore the social, ethical, and political dimensions of design.

You approach all three domains holistically, allowing you to specialise or work across boundaries.
