Your love of music and of people is the starting point of this programme. Throughout your studies, you will build a strong foundation of musical and therapeutic knowledge – and immediately learn how to apply it in practice. Later in the programme, you will choose a specialisation that matches your talents and the role you want to take on as a music therapist.
The bachelor’s programme in Music Therapy is built around clusters that each support your musical, therapeutic and personal growth.
For three years, you will receive weekly one-to-one lessons on your main instrument. You will also take part in choir classes and ensembles, and have lessons in improvisation, singing, piano, guitar and drums.
You will begin by composing and then deepen your understanding of music theory and the music history of a particular period. You will also follow ear-training classes to strengthen your listening skills.
You will learn to work with a range of methods and client groups. Subjects include music therapy theory, health studies, psychology and basic medical knowledge. In the TechLab, you will explore how music technology can be used in therapy.
From your very first year, you will put theory into practice, learning how to work carefully, creatively and purposefully with different groups of people. You will see firsthand how powerful music therapy can be.
Broaden your horizons through multidisciplinary projects and collaborations with professional partners. In your elective space, you will explore your own interests within the field and discover who you are as a music therapist.
You have a passion for music and strong instrumental skills. You already know that music can move people – yourself and others. Music helps people connect with their emotions, which is what makes it such a powerful tool in therapy. We will encourage you to explore how your musical knowledge and creativity can support the growth and well-being of individuals, groups and organisations.
A solid musical foundation is essential for every music therapist. When playing becomes second nature, you can focus fully on connecting with your client. At ArtEZ Academy of Music, you will receive extensive training to help you understand how, why and when to use music most effectively. Because every music therapy session is tailored to the person in front of you, your flexibility as a trained musician will be one of your greatest strengths.
As a Music Therapy graduate from ArtEZ, you will know exactly how to use music to support people’s development – whether for treatment, guidance or prevention. You will feel confident in your skills and flexible in your approach, enabling you to build genuine connections with your clients and truly make a difference.
