Preparation

Here’s what you’ll need to do to get ready for your entrance exam:

  1. Write a motivation letter
  2. Practise for the music theory test
  3. Prepare a performance programme (for singing as your main instrument)
  4. Prepare a performance programme (for an instrumental main instrument)

1. Write a motivation letter

Working in the field of music therapy can be both rewarding and demanding. We’d like to know whether you have the personal qualities and motivation to thrive in it. Why do you want to study Music Therapy? Your motivation letter will help us understand what inspires you and what drives your choice for this programme.

2. Practise for the music theory test

The music theory test is not about perfection. It’s a chance to show that you have a good foundation – knowledge and skills that you can develop further during your studies.

Could you use some extra practice?

Between early February and late March, ArtEZ Connected Enschede offers an intensive Crash Course in Music Theory and Ear Training to help you prepare for your entrance exam at the ArtEZ Academy of Music. It’s a great way to strengthen your skills and make a confident start!

3. For singing as your main instrument

Prepare your own programme with pieces you’d like to perform. Do you also play another instrument or write your own songs? You can include these in your programme too. Your programme must include:

  1. Four songs – at least one classical piece, one popular song and one a cappella performance. Variety in tempo and style. Each song must cover a range of at least one octave.
  2. One (literary) poem to recite.
  3. One simple piece on a chordal instrument – this may also be an easy song accompaniment.

4. For an instrumental main instrument

Prepare your own programme with pieces you’d like to perform. Do you also play another instrument or write your own compositions? You can include these as well. Your programme must include:

Three instrumental pieces for your main instrument. Make sure they vary in style, character and expression. Depending on your experience and interests, they may be classical or popular; for example, an etude, solo sonata, ensemble piece, band repertoire or jazz standard. You may perform with your own accompanist, band or ensemble.

One simple piece on a chordal instrument – this may also be an easy song accompaniment.

Two songs that you will sing yourself, showing contrast in style and genre (preferably one classical and one popular). You may accompany yourself on guitar or piano.
