The future of music theatre is shaped in part by the theatre makers of tomorrow who take the Music Theatre programme. Research plays a key role here, as does a strong connection to professional practice. To help shape the field, the Music Theatre programme works intensively with leading partners in the profession.
Each year, second-year students are guests of three music theatre companies. With these theatre makers and companies, you will create a short presentation with collaboration from Orkater, Silbersee, Het Geluid Van, Rosa Sonnevanck, BOT, Veenfabriek and Urland.
Karavaan is a renowned site-specific theatre festival in North Holland. Every year, third-year Music Theatre students create a production specifically for Karavaan. Fourth-year students do the same for Arnhem’s H80 festival.
Each year, there is a collaborative project with Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, an interdisciplinary programme in Switzerland similar to the Bachelor Music Theatre in Arnhem. ArtEZ also has an exchange with the students from Zürich.
Kunstnacht is an open stage in the city of Nijmegen that marks the start of the city's cultural season. For this occasion, third-year Music Theatre students create a special site-specific performance every year.
For two weeks, third-year Music Theatre students immerse themselves in Nieuw Geluid, a testbed and laboratory for experimental youth theatre done in collaboration with Theater Sonnevanck, De Nieuwe OOST, KASKO and additional professionals from the field. After two weeks, they test their musical and theatrical research with a young audience.
At the end of the second year, students are guests of three leading music theatre companies, such as Ereprijs, Orkater and Theater Sonnevanck. As a student, you do more than visit; you will discover the DNA of these companies. Your findings will be presented in a collaborative presentation called "In de Geest van."
Together with students from Jazz & Pop, Fine Art, Dance, Theatre and Creative Writing — and guided by an interdisciplinary company of theatre, music and dance — a site-specific performance, installation or event is created each year. You learn from one another and discover how other art forms can strengthen your own work.
As a musician, the physical and mental demands can be high. That’s why ArtEZ places strong emphasis on healthy musicianship, especially during project days and weeks. You follow a series of sessions on healthy voice use and learn to recognise and prevent work-related issues.
