Throughout your studies you work on a wide variety of projects and special days or weeks.
You spend the introductory week with your fellow students at ArtEZ Academy of Music, ArtEZ Academy of Arts & Design Zwolle and the Artist Educator in Theatre & Media programme. During this week you work on a joint project such as a festival or a presentation, supervised by ArtEZ lecturers and guest lecturers.
Each year, there’s a project week in which we collaborate with students from Classical Music and Jazz & Pop on musical projects with social impact. For instance, we have performed at an asylum seekers’ centre in Dronten and given home concerts for caregivers, in collaboration with KASKO and ZwolleDoet!. We have also organised musical performances in hospitals and collaborated with visitors of the Salvation Army and Stichting Focus as part of the research project Samenleven in de Wijk (Living Together in the Neighbourhood). Inspired by interviews with local residents, students composed original music and organised a well-attended open mic event.
Solos, duets, choirs, and ensembles form the foundation of the annual Musiceerfestival (Music Performance Festival). In a presentation, you demonstrate how performing, creating, collaborating, and teaching music come together in this programme. Over four evenings, all the Music in Education students in Zwolle step into the spotlight. You will hear music in a wide range of styles — from classical to jazz and pop — with plenty of room for original compositions.
Once a year, you and your group will organise a project week centred on a theme of your choice. For example, musical theatre, Latin American music, pop, non-Western music or arranging. At the end of the week you present what you have created to each other or to an audience. This gives you, as a new student, the opportunity to connect with other year groups through music.
Collaboration with other disciplines is becoming increasingly important in education, which is why you will spend a number of days each semester working with students from other ArtEZ teacher training programmes. Questions to be explored are: what is dance, theatre or music? And how do creative processes take shape within these disciplines? You visit exhibitions, performances and shows together, explore their context, connect current themes to artistic expression, and view what you see from a historical perspective.
During WinterLab you and about 400 other students from various ArtEZ programmes tackle a topical theme of your choosing. You choose one of the 26 labs and, together with students from other disciplines, work on a project that challenges you both intellectually and creatively. Guided by artistic professionals, you will learn to collaborate across perspectives, explore new ideas and step outside your comfort zone.
As a musician, you sometimes face huge demands on your physical and mental health. That’s why ArtEZ pays close attention to your health as you make music, primarily during special project days and weeks. You will follow a series of classes on how to take care of your voice and learn how to recognise and prevent work-related illness.
