Throughout your studies, you will work on a wide variety of projects and special days or weeks.
You will spend the introductory week with your fellow students in the ArtEZ Academy of Music, ArtEZ Academy of Arts & Design Zwolle and the Artist Educator in Theatre & Media programme. During this week, you will work on a joint project such as a festival or a presentation, supervised by ArtEZ lecturers and guest lecturers.
Each year, there is a project week in which Music in Education students collaborate with students from Classical Music and Jazz & Pop on musical projects with social impact. For instance, we have performed at an asylum seekers’ centre in Dronten and given home concerts for caregivers, in collaboration with KASKO and ZwolleDoet! We have also organised musical performances in hospitals and collaborated with visitors from the Salvation Army and Stichting Focus as part of the research project Samenleven in de Wijk (Living in the Neighbourhood Together). Inspired by interviews with local residents, students composed original music and organised a well-attended open mic event.
Solos, duets, choirs, and ensembles form the foundation of the annual Musiceerfestival (Music Performance Festival). In a presentation, you will demonstrate how performing, creating, collaborating, and teaching music come together in this programme. Over four evenings, all the Music in Education students in Zwolle will step into the spotlight. You will hear music in a wide range of styles — from classical to jazz and pop — with plenty of room for original compositions.
Once a year, you and your group will organise a project week centred on a theme of your choice, such as musical theatre, Latin music, pop, non-Western music or arranging. At the end of the week, you will present what you have created to each other or to an audience. This gives you, as a new student, the opportunity to connect with students from other years through music.
Collaboration with other disciplines is becoming increasingly important in education, which is why you will spend several days per semester working with students from other ArtEZ teacher training programmes. Questions to be explored are "what is dance, theatre or music?" and "how do creative processes take shape within these disciplines?" You will visit exhibitions, performances and shows together, explore their context, connect current themes to artistic expression, and view what you see from a historical perspective.
During WinterLab, you and about 400 other students from various ArtEZ programmes will tackle a topical theme of your choosing. You will choose one of the 26 labs and, together with students from other disciplines, work on a project that challenges you both intellectually and creatively. Guided by artistic professionals, you will learn to collaborate across perspectives, explore new ideas and step outside your comfort zone.
As a musician, you sometimes face huge demands on your physical and mental health. This is why ArtEZ pays close attention to your health while making music, primarily during special project days and weeks. You will follow a series of classes on how to take care of your voice and learn how to recognise and prevent work-related illness.
