You are introduced to music teaching and the methods involved. In your first year, your internships will take place in both primary and secondary education. Naturally, you will also make and write a lot of music yourself. This will take up about a third of your time. During the first three years, you receive lessons on your main instrument. Together with fellow students, you will perform in front of an audience several times a year – for example, at the Musiceerfestival and during project weeks. In the Music Theory Studio, you will take courses in music theory.
In addition to music history, you will also explore the broader fields of art and culture. For instance, you will go on an art trip and take classes together with students from Fine Art and Design in Education and Artist Educator in Theatre and Media.
In the second and third years you expand your knowledge and skills. This includes internships in primary and secondary education, as well as in a community-based project, where you learn to adapt music lessons to the specific needs of your pupils. This is also an introduction to the Remedial Education Music Therapist specialisation, which you can choose as a graduation pathway in year 4.
In the Musical Leadership course, you write music for school ensembles. You also learn to conduct choirs and ensembles. And during Band Coaching you learn basic skills on the drums, guitar, bass guitar and keyboards.
We place strong emphasis on developing your entrepreneurial mindset — taking initiative, making decisions, and working in a results-oriented way. Together with your fellow students, you help organise recital evenings, the open day, and the work week. We also teach you the essential basics of business and economics. And you learn to recognise trends in society and the cultural sector, and how to respond to them.
You are now able to give practical and theoretical lessons. You can guide students and adapt your teaching methods as necessary. In your final year, you conduct research and complete a graduation internship at a placement of your choice — which may also be abroad.
Also in this final year, you choose a specialisation. This could be primary or secondary education, or a topic with a more specific focus such as remedial music teacher. Or a particular discipline, like community arts or musical theatre. In addition, you choose a minor that aligns with your interests – for example, additional instrumental lessons, arranging or songwriting.
Within your specialisation you work on your own music production with or for a specific group of your choice. This is the musical conclusion of your studies. During the ArtEZ Finals you present yourself to the outside world. With guidance from a major subject teacher.
You conduct research by creating, experimenting, and asking questions that are meaningful to you. This takes place both within your programme and beyond — in projects, collaborations, and larger research initiatives. You work together with lecturers, researchers, and professionals outside ArtEZ. This helps you understand how your work relates to and contributes to contemporary issues in fields such as art, healthcare, education, technology, and sustainability.
You explore by creating, experimenting, and asking the questions that matter to you. This happens within your programme and beyond: in projects, collaborations, and larger research programmes. Along the way, you’ll work with teachers, researchers, and people outside ArtEZ. This way, you will learn firsthand how your work connects to important modern topics the world faces today, such as art, healthcare, education, technology, and sustainability.
