You will learn the most from the students and groups you teach. That is why we feel that internships are the heart of your programme. Nowhere will you gain more hands-on experience than in Enschede: you will be teaching for seven out of eight semesters. You will start your first internship in the very first semester. Alongside your internship, you will take main subject classes and participate in reflection sessions at your internship school so that you can immediately apply what you learn. From the third year onwards, you will tailor your internships to your own ambitions and strengths.
In the first three years, you will do internships for about half a day per week. You will first learn a variety of teaching methods and how to write good arrangements. Gradually, your tasks will become more complex: in addition to teaching, you might prepare concerts or school presentations or work with students on a musical.
In your fourth year, you will do a internship in the upper years of secondary education, preparing students for their final exams. In your third or fourth year, you may also choose a internship outside education. You will also do a short internship (no longer than a day) at one of the Music in Education Enschede partner schools, in the presence of your main subject lecturer/internship supervisor.
The Music in Education programme is part of a regional network of internship schools and schools for music teachers in primary and secondary education. This network includes teacher-training programmes in Deventer and Doetinchem, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the University of Twente. We collaborate with nearly thirty cultural organisations, including theatres, music ensembles, opera companies, choirs and orchestras. This means you can choose from a wide range of internship options within and outside education.
