Renowned groups come to Arnhem for a day or a week to give masterclasses, play together with students and coach them in songwriting. For example, Snarky Puppy once came for a masterclass and later returned for a week as artists in residence. The ICP Orchestra has also been our guest for a week.
Collaboration with students from Fine Art, Dance, Theatre, Creative Writing and Music Theatre encourages you even more to extend your work beyond your own department. These projects take shape within a week and often lead to contacts that are picked up again later in your studies.
We regularly invite renowned musicians to give a masterclass. We often approach leading instrumentalists in Jazz & Pop, but we also invite musicians who can coach ensembles and bands. Finally, there are masterclasses that allow you to dive deeper into specific techniques. Marcus Miller, John Patitucci, Greetje Bijma and Fred Frith are among the musicians who have given masterclasses in the past.
These are workshops and masterclasses by a guest lecturer, focused on your specific instrument. On the first day, students from Arnhem and Zwolle who share the same main subject come together to follow a joint programme with the guest lecturer. On the second day, there is a band in residence in both Arnhem and Zwolle – one with more focus on pop, the other more on jazz. Students choose which band they want to take masterclasses and workshops with.

As professionals, musicians face high physical and mental demands. That is why, at ArtEZ, we devote plenty of attention to healthy music-making, particularly during project days and project weeks. You will take a series of classes on healthy voice use and learn how to recognise and prevent work-related injuries.
