Fine Art - Bachelor - Enschede

Programme per year

The first year of this four-year bachelor’s programme is a broad introductory year - a year in which you explore new possibilities and experiment widely, together with students from other artistic disciplines. You learn to work with a range of practices, such as painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, spatial work and new media. You also take classes in art theory and philosophy, and you develop academic skills such as analysing and writing texts.

At the end of the year, you choose to focus either on the flat surface (Painting) or on space (All Space & Sculpture). This choice forms the starting point for your main phase of study. You work within a class of no more than thirty students.

In your first year, you can also apply for the Honours Lab, as an additional theoretical track alongside your own bachelor’s programme.

In the second year, the focus shifts to what drives you and what you want to create yourself. You work in small groups on developing your own visual language. You are guided by at least three lecturers. Each semester concludes with an assessment (werkschouw), in which your practice, ArtLab and technical skills are evaluated.

In your third year, you deepen your personal field of practice under the guidance of lecturers and guest lecturers. You work more independently and take the lead in shaping your own practice programme.

The international exchange programme gives you the opportunity to study at an academy abroad for three to six months. We collaborate with a wide network of international academies and art institutions where you can spend a semester.

You may also choose to deepen your theoretical and practical knowledge of a specific subject or technique. To do this, you write a project proposal. Throughout the process, you receive guidance from both a theory lecturer and a practice lecturer.

In the fourth and final year of the bachelor’s programme, you follow a curriculum that prepares you for your future professional practice. You also write your graduation thesis under the guidance of a theory lecturer and work on your final exam project. This work is presented at the large annual exhibition for graduating students: ArtEZ finals. The exhibition is visited by collectors, curators, gallerists and critics.
