Within the Fine Art programme, your studio practice is central and you receive individual guidance. You deepen your practice through ArtLabs and practice-based research, and develop insight into art theory and philosophy. Alongside this, you work on technical skills, such as working with a range of materials and methods. You prepare for professional practice by developing your portfolio and website, and by paying attention to project planning and documentation. Reflection is an integral part of the programme, through group critiques and by writing and presenting about your work.
The first year is an orientation year in which you become familiar with a range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, spatial work and new media. You take courses in art theory and philosophy and develop academic skills such as analysis and writing.
At the start of the year, you choose a point of departure: Painting (with a focus on the two-dimensional surface) or All Space & Sculpture (research into space and sculpture). You experiment, conduct research and formulate your own research questions. You work in small groups and are guided by at least three lecturers.
You further deepen your practice, develop greater independence and shape your own practice-based programme. There are opportunities for international exchange, internships or self-initiated projects. The programme prepares you for professional practice and for building networks with collectors, gallery owners and exhibition makers.
In the fourth and final year of the bachelor’s programme, you follow a curriculum that prepares you for your future professional practice. You also write your graduation thesis under the guidance of a theory lecturer and work on your final exam project. This work is presented at the large annual exhibition for graduating students: ArtEZ finals. The exhibition is visited by collectors, curators, gallerists and critics.
