The programme is structured around creating, thinking and teaching. You will create visual work, explore theory and practise teaching. Each year has a different focus. You will start with a broad approach and plenty of personal guidance.
In the first year, you will get to know all aspects of the programme. You will work on your visual skills and take subjects on such topics as art and cultural history, philosophy and education. You will visit schools and institutions and go on an excursion to Berlin. You will also take part in interdisciplinary projects in the academy.
You will deepen your skills in technique and theory. In the second semester, you will do an internship in secondary education. You will learn to teach and create educational materials. During your internship you will receive close supervision. You will also continue to work on joint projects related to education and didactics.
You choose where you do your internship: in a school, museum or cultural institution. You will explore how you shape your role as an artist educator. You will also take an entrepreneurship course and go on an excursion to Rome. Themes such as assessment and inclusive education will be covered.
In your final year, you will work independently on an educational design. This could be a series of lessons, an instruction method or a game. You will test your design at an internship location of your choice. You will also create a body of personal work, which you will present during the ArtEZ finals.
