Programme structure per year

During the programme, ‘the artist’ and ‘the educator’ grow together. You will develop your artistry in studios and workshops, and learn to teach in both theory and practice. You will also broaden your knowledge of art and culture through inspiring subjects.

The foundation phase focuses on basic knowledge and skills in all of the three core disciplines of the programme: visual art, theory and education. You will also explore the possibilities within the professional field. You will have classes in a group of about fifteen to twenty students. In addition to visual arts subjects, you will delve into topics such as philosophy, cultural history and developmental psychology, and you will complete your first internship.

If you would like extra theoretical depth, you can also apply for admission to the Honours Lab in your first year, which enriches the theoretical side of your Bachelor’s programme

In the second and third years, you will increasingly start to shape your own studies. Through electives, specialisations and workshops, you will explore how you want to make a difference as an artist-educator. You will work in mixed groups of full-time and part-time students, receive guidance from lecturers and guest lecturers, and take part in excursions.

The range of subjects varies from thematic work, such as visualising a verbal concept, to in-depth studies in painting, photography or graphic design. You will also attend workshops to develop your technical and theoretical skills, for example in screen printing, InDesign, pigments or cultural appropriation. At the end of this phase, you will present your developing focus within the domains of artistic practice, theory and education.

The last year of the programme focuses primarily on your individual graduation path: the final internship, the art education research and the artistic graduation research with which you will work towards your final presentation in the ArtEZ finals. Which lecturers guide you in this process depends largely on your own preferences and chosen specialisation.
