During the programme, ‘the artist’ and ‘the educator’ grow together. You will develop your artistry in studios and workshops, and learn to teach in both theory and practice and to connect these two aspects. You will also broaden your knowledge of art and culture through inspiring subjects.
In the first year, you will develop a broad foundation. You will take many visual arts subjects and study philosophy, contemporary art and cultural history. You will prepare for teaching by delving into topics such as subject didactics and by doing an internship. You will also start putting your skills to the test in secondary education. This will help you discover whether teaching suits you and allow you to practise teaching under supervision.
In both study years, you will do an internship. In year 2, you will do this in secondary or vocational education. In year 3, you will choose your own internship, either within or outside education. The in-school internships range from primary and secondary schools to vocational education. External internships may take place at museums, festivals, publishers or art centres, in the Netherlands or abroad. The programme has many connections in the professional field and will help you find suitable internships. During this phase, you will collaborate across disciplines with students from the Theatre and Dance artist-educator programmes.
You will also choose from several specialisations in artistry and education. The visual arts electives are wide-ranging: from thematic work, such as visualising a verbal concept, to in-depth studies in painting, documentary making, portrait photography, typography or animation. You are the one who will decide which subjects to take.
You will also follow workshops to develop specific technical skills, such as screen printing, graphic techniques, InDesign, paint and pigment, liquid plastic or raku ceramics. In addition, there are theory workshops about important topics, such as cultural appropriation. These workshops take place in dedicated spaces.
In the final year, you will work on your graduation path. You will complete a final internship of your choice, in education or at an art institution. You will also carry out art-educational and artistic research. You will be guided by lecturers who are a good fit for your plans and ideas. This is how you will work towards your final presentation in the ArtEZ finals. There are also group sessions, Fine Art and Design in Education talks and meetings in studios or workspaces.
