Comic Design - Bachelor - Zwolle

Admission

After registering via Studielink, you will receive an email with instructions explaining how the admission process works.

The admission process is a way for us to get to know you and see whether you are a good fit for the programme. At the same time, it is also an opportunity for you to discover whether this programme is what you are looking for.

On this page you can read what the admission process involves and what you need to submit.

What we look for in your application

During the admission process, we are curious about who you are and how you work. We are not only interested in the final result, but also in how you got there. What was the starting point for your idea? What worked, what did not? Show us your process and take us into your way of thinking.

What our lecturers are looking for:

  • Your creative ability: you can translate ideas into images. You have a sense of colour, form and materials. Your work shows that you can work from observation and imagination.
  • Your narrative ability: you can tell stories in images, whether through comics, animation, text or other forms. Your work shows that you know how to develop and convey a story.
  • Your originality and visual language: your work shows individuality and curiosity. You experiment with style and dare to make choices that fit your view of the world.
  • Your motivation and communication: what drives you to become a comic artist? Can you explain that, and are you able to share your fascination and inspiration with others?
  • Your reflective ability: show that you can look critically at what you create. You are open to feedback and want to learn and explore.

The first round

For the first selection round, you will need to submit the following digitally:

  • a completed questionnaire;
  • your portfolio;
  • one or more home assignments;
  • a motivation letter.

Based on these, we will decide whether to invite you to the second round: the admission day. A team of lecturers will assess whether the programme is right for you.

The second round

If you pass the first round, you will be invited to the admission day at the academy in Zwolle. This is what to expect on that day:

  • You will work on an additional assignment
    You will be given an assignment in which you demonstrate how you combine image and narrative. You will work on a short comic strip fragment, sketch or visual story on location.

  • You will draw on location
    You will complete an observational drawing exercise. We will look at how you observe, select and translate your observation into images.

  • You will have an interview with two lecturers
    In this interview you will talk about your portfolio, your motivation and how you view visual stories. We will also talk about your homework assignments and how you tackled them. We are interested in hearing about your ideas, your view of the world and your attitude to learning.
