The entrance examination consists of three parts: your motivation, a practical audition and a music theory test. These are conducted separately. Sometimes the theory test is scheduled on the same day as the practical exam.
The entrance examination gives us a complete picture of who you are and what your ideas, ambitions and plans consist of. Of course, you must be musical, have a solid foundation in your chosen instrument and have a good ear. However, the most important thing is that you have enough opportunities to develop musically.
Write a short text (150-250 words) introducing yourself, in which you explain how this programme can help you achieve your goals. We hope to see this vision and personal motivation reflected in your practical exam.
For the practical portion (the audition), you should put together a short programme consisting of various works. Please bring a list of the pieces you wish to play with four copies made. The admission requirements for the practical portion of the examination vary depending on the main subject. You can find these under the major of your choice on the Majors page.
You will perform your programme for at least two members of the examination board. They will assess your aptitude, technical mastery, musical expression, individuality and creativity. They will also focus on your potential for development. You may receive instructions on the spot, or they may ask you to play a particular section in a slightly different way.
You may play a programme with or without piano accompaniment. If you sing or play a monophonic instrument, we prefer that you have accompaniment by a pianist. If you are unable to provide your own piano accompanist, please indicate so when you register and we will arrange for an accompanist. There is a fee for this service. Note: please email the piano parts to conservatorium.zwolle@artez.nl at least three weeks in advance.
During the audition, you may be asked to sight-read or sing a piece of music without preparation.
The music theory test indicates your level of music theory as well as your potential for development. The test consists of an individual portion and a group portion. We tailor the individual test as much as possible to your chosen major. The music theory test for piano is therefore different from that for flute or voice. However, a similar theoretical basis applies to every instrument.

After your entrance examination, the admissions committee will advise the ArtEZ Academy of Music Examination Board. This board will check whether the admissions procedure has been carried out correctly and will ultimately determine if you are eligible for admission. You will be notified of the result in writing.
An "admissible” result is only valid for the programme for which you have applied and for the academic year immediately following the entrance examination. If you would like to apply for a programme or specialisation at a different location, you must apply separately. If you would like to begin your programme up to one year later, you must submit a written request to the Examination Board to retain your results for a period of one year.
If you disagree with a negative admissions decision or believe that incorrect procedures were followed during the admissions process, you may lodge an appeal with the Examination Board.
