The Tailor-Made Music in Education course in Enschede will train you to become an inspiring music teacher who teaches music in a meaningful way. The duration and structure of the course depend on your previous education. Discover the possibilities.

Tailor-Made Music in Education

The Tailor-Made Music in Education course at the Academy of Music in Enschede is an abridged version of the four-year Music in Education bachelor degree. There are three versions, which differ in terms of duration and course curriculum.

New: in six months with a degree from the former General Musical Education (AMV) teacher training course

Especially for students who have completed the former General Musical Education (AMV) teacher training course and so have a second-degree teaching qualification. In order to obtain the Education in Music first-degree teaching qualification, you complete the following three elements in the space of six months:

  • Lower years secondary education music major (16 teaching hours);
  • Lower years secondary education music internship (at least 20 teaching hours);
  • You conclude the course with a graduation product on a subject of your choice.

In two years with a bachelor degree in Music or Music Therapy

Especially for students who already have the musical knowledge and skills. In this version, the emphasis is on teaching with a focus on didactics and methods. You follow the same curriculum as the four-year Music in Education bachelor, but with exemptions for the main instrument and the music theory subjects, among others.

  • You take the primary education, secondary education and Culture and Arts majors, the teaching subjects such as Pedagogy, Psychology and Educational Science and the basic music subjects such as Piano Accompaniment and Vocals;
  • You do four internships (primary education, lower years secondary education and upper years secondary education and Culture and Arts);
  • You participate in projects of the four-year bachelor such as the cultural trip and music production (See the list of projects under the Music in Education course);
  • You conclude the course with a graduation product on a subject of your choice.

In three years with a (almost) teacher training degree (PABO) or a bachelor degree from a different teacher training course

In this version, the emphasis is on making music and music theory. You follow the same curriculum as the four-year Music in Education bachelor course, but with exemptions for the didactic subjects. Your abridged curriculum is as follows:

  • You take classes in your own musical major and all the music theory subjects;
  • You do four internships (primary education, lower years secondary education and upper years secondary education and Culture and Arts);
  • You participate in projects of the four-year bachelor such as the cultural trip and music production (See the list of projects under the Music in Education course);
  • You conclude the course with a graduation product on a subject of your choice.

  • Your best teachers are the students and groups you teach. Which is why we regard the internships as the heart of the course and why the six-month version of this course also includes one internship. During the two and three-year versions, you do four different internships: primary education, secondary education lower years, secondary education upper years and Culture and Arts.

    Even if you have already completed a teacher training course or even if you are already a teacher, these internships are essential on the road to becoming a music teacher. This is because the methodology of music education is very specific. During the internships, you can put the relevant theory into practice.

    The Music in Education course is the pivot of a large network of educational and cultural institutions. This means that you can choose from numerous internship positions within and outside regular education.

  • We deliberately opt for small groups and personal attention. An academic career advisor will continue to support you throughout your studies. If you have any questions or problems that go beyond your academic career, you can contact a student counsellor or the Board of Examiners. If you have any doubts about your course or problems with your academic career advisor or a lecturer, you can make an appointment with the Head of Department.

  • Knowing where opportunities lie, taking initiative, being a capable organiser, able to pitch yourself: these are skills that you work on throughout your studies and that ensure that after you graduate you are an enterprising music teacher who will have a job in the field within a year.

  • High demands are placed on musicians on a physical and mental level. That is why we at ArtEZ pay the necessary attention to healthy music making. We mainly do this during project days and weeks. You follow a series of lessons about healthy voice use and you learn to recognize and prevent work-related complaints.
