Music Theatre

The Master of Music Theatre is aimed at students interested in interdisciplinary collaboration at the Master’s level and new contemporary work methods. The study programme is based in Arnhem in a building where multiple disciplines are represented.

The Master of Music Theatre is geared to dual-talented individuals:

  • Students who wish to immerse themselves in the combination of music and theatre, whether or not in an interdisciplinary context.
  • Students who, as musicians, wish to broaden their scope with theatre.
  • Students who, as theatre dramatists/performers wish to broaden their scope with music.
  • Students who wish to broaden their scope in their field by applying music theatre elements to their artistry.

Study programme

The programme of the Master of Music Theatre is organised around two important aspects of professional practice: performing and/or creating. You will describe and motivate your choice of career profile in detail in a study plan. Here you will specify what you wish to research and/or delve deeper into as well as why and how you think you will be able to complete the Master of Music Theatre at ArtEZ in two years.

Individual study programme

Within the programme, you will receive a great deal of space in the individual study programme to enable you to develop your craft and artistic level as far as possible. In consultation with the programme leader of Music Theatre, you will compile an individual study programme based on the study plan. This programme can include both individual lessons as well as group lessons. The choice of lecturer falls within the broad spectrum of the various Music Theatre disciplines. In instances of specific demand for modules in other ArtEZ departments (theatre programme, creative writing), it is often necessary to complete an entry test.

Presentation 1 and final performance

At the end of every academic year, you will do a presentation or performance. As part of your profile, this can be a presentation/ performance with you as either creator or performer, or both. This presentation is open to the public and is assessed by a jury of experts. The presentation in the first year will be at least 30 minutes long and no longer than 45 minutes. The final performance in the second year is at least 50 minutes long and no longer than 75 minutes. You will only be admitted to the final audition once all other study components have been completed. The budget for the coaching: for presentation 1, you have a budget of 600 Euros available to spend on the coaching of your choice. The budget for the final performance is 800 Euros.

Projects – Productions – Internships

At the beginning of the academic year, you will determine with the programme leader which projects, productions and internships you will follow. These should match the study credits allotted for this. Recordings, reports, or articles related to the projects/productions/internships are included in the portfolio. In addition to general lectures, each student is assigned a research supervisor. The research results will be presented publicly in April of the second study year.

Portfolio

You will compile a portfolio during the two study years.

This portfolio will have two parts:

  • The development portfolio. In this portion, you will describe your development in regard to the various study components on the basis of programme questions/criteria.
  • The showcase portfolio. In this portion you will collect audio and video recordings, reviews, productions, overview of the lecturers (guest lecturers, coaches, etc.). This part of the portfolio is important for job interviews and auditions and for the website of the ‘music theatre specialist’.

Lectures

At the beginning of each academic year, a discussion is conducted with all students under the guidance of the programme leader, during which it will be discussed which guest speakers will be invited to lecture on aspects of professional practice. The Master of Music Theatre is taught in Dutch.
