Specific Clarinet admission requirements

Besides the general admission requirements, there are specific admission requirements for each instrument. You prepare five pieces, which are slightly different in character and tempo. During the audition, you will perform a minimum of two and a maximum of three of the prepared pieces. You do this with your own band or a band from the academy of music. You must request this ahead of time and there will be a charge.

Important aspects, which may be part of the audition and are considered in the assessment, are the following:

  • A basically good embouchure that is capable of development;
  • Sufficient technical command of the instrument;
  • Playing major and minor third scales and the chromatic scale (insofar as the range of the instrument and the performer permits, the scales should be played over two octaves);
  • Playing all major and minor triads;
  • After a brief preparation, improvising on a chord diagram from sheet music;
  • Improvising by ear based on a simple chord diagram;
  • After a brief preparation, playing a simple theme from sheet music;
  • Repeat a simple phrase by ear;
  • Besides the 5 pieces, you will prepare 2 etudes from the classical repertoire and 2 from the jazz & pop repertoire.
