The annual Small Press Awards, organised by Cross Comix and Stripdagen Haarlem, celebrate artisanal, experimental, often handmade publications. The 2025 jury assessed the work of 13 participants. “The work was of exceptional quality this year.”
Moos Boeke, alumnus of Illustration Design Zwolle, won first prize with his graphic narrative Abel and Cain. He receives €1,500 and the opportunity to create an exhibition during Stripdagen Haarlem 2026.
“The free and beautiful drawings, and the use of a simple (but effective) colour palette, tell a layered and compelling story that intrigues—visually capturing the complex emotions of gender nonconformity. Abel and Cain ticks all the boxes of what makes a good graphic narrative.”
Second prize went to another Illustration Design alumnus: Vera Wolsink. Her work Niets is ooit helemaal stil was praised for its etched work, showing craftsmanship and dedication.
Hilde Vermeeren shared third prize with Hilal Uzuner. Vermeeren graduated from the BA Animation Design Zwolle. Her work Er is geen manier een weiland door te steken zonder het gras plat te trappen has a unique presentation format: “By laying out the book’s loose pages one by one next to each other, each page turn creates a spread that places the images in a new context.”
