Animation Design: we accept things as they are

  • Design

Nadir van Meurs did the course in Animation Design, and in a video, we see a part of his graduation project. His work is a collection of short stories named “Things not broken”. It’s his search to find his style of the genre horror. In the video, we hear: “You’re sitting on your couch. Home. Safe and comfortable. No threat to your life. Your livelihood. Your loved ones. But you can feel it. Your heart doesn’t beat fast. Your hands don’t tremble. But you can feel it. Fear.”

Nadir says that his work was the direct consequence of not graduating in the year 2019. He was constantly evaluating his work and was never happy with the end result. So, it became clear that he wouldn’t graduate that year. Perfection stood in his way. He started watching horror movies and got interested in this genre. He started writing. Without any planning, without an outline. Merely a vague idea. And this is how he created this collection of stories. He explains: “I want to keep exploring the energy and power of something that is unplanned and unpolished.

During the four-year higher professional course in Animation Design at ArtEZ in Zwolle you are trained to become an animator in the animation, media, or game industry. You learn to use “lifeless” objects and figures to create an emotional story. You learn to use different animation and film techniques, analogue and digital. You convert ideas into stories, which makes you both an author as well as a professional creator. After you graduate, you can work as an independent animator or for an agency.
