with her feet deeply rooted in (classical) music—with terms like ‘animato’, ‘energico’, ‘festivamente’ and ‘scherzando’— jozefine vasse (2002) tries to write a layered visual cacophony with every work she makes. she explores questions around resilience and sense of purpose in her practice. relationships —whether between or outside people—fascinate her. how do organisms find their way in this world framed by rules, without exhausting themselves in the process? in a critically engaged yet humorous and optimistic way, jozefine exposes matter without pointing fingers; the humour in her work is witty, yet not ironical or belittling. it clearly serves her work as a way of softly approaching the viewer, like you would with an animal you don’t know. in a circular motion, she tries to find out what confuses, angers or makes her happy. her investigations often manifest themselves in video works, in which she uses visibly handmade costumes, music and text. vasse also makes paintings, where the same versatility in use of colour can be seen. in her work, jozefine challenges the viewer to go on a quest in which no answers are possible. through the musical-esque worlds she invites the viewer into, she disrupts precisely what you thought was certain and makes you sit comfortably in the absurdness that arises within confusion.

Artist statement
fien just learned a new word: circumambulating. synonyms for this word are amble, cruise, drift, float, hike, meander, ramble, roam, saunter, straggle, stray, stroll, traipse or trek. jozefine finds out what it is that excites her, makes her sad, makes her mad, or makes her resilient mainly through video. she often expands this medium to show the multiplicity of meaning and relationships. fien enjoys bugs, music, horses, color and reading books that loved ones have recommended to her.
