Robberts Lockdown

Everyday at 15:00 he eats a banana, everyday he walks up and down the stairs and every day he publishes a new lockdown-story on his instagram. Robbert Schneiders, student Product Design Arnhem kick-started on the first of June the ArtEZ-Instagram-takeovers. He took over the Instagram-stories of ArtEZ so that 7000 followers could have a look behind the scenes. Robbert tells more about himself and his new way of working.

"I am a technical lad and my technical background has been the basis for the projects I worked on at Artez. How do certain techniques work, how are certain processes performed, how can objects of mass consumption be converted into singular objects? I like to zoom into a certain aspect of the technique. This forms the basis: technique is the fundamental core of the work.

I am graduating with construction works in which certain elements are blown up. Take a chair, for instance, in which the cushions are replaced for inflatable air cushions. Because you blow up such an air cushion in a specific frame, it immediately forms the connection between the cushion and the frame

Working during the lockdown
Robbert works in his own basement. This was at first a storage space, but at the beginning of the corona-crisis he has converted it into his own mini-workplace. “Because I was not allowed outside, I expressly started working with materials that were already there. Prior to this I had always been very strict. I needed to boost my own process. I wanted to break free and saw cubicles of wood in stead of thinking strictly. To reflect through making is liberating. This resulted in a lot of gravitation towards ideas and products. Building on this idea forms the basis of my future after ArtEZ.

Despite feeling comfortable at home and getting on with my work, I missed ArtEZ and the sense of family that I have there and the guidance of the teachers. Now – during graduation – there is slowly more access to the school. There there are possibilities for finalization of parts of my process, as for instance being able to melt plastic and working on a larger scale. In fact you can do everything much easier at school than at home.“

What do you dream of?
“The best thing would of course be to have my own work station in which I can make exclusive products. I have already generated so many ideas and made efforts towards certain products. I would like to continue these and develop them further, in order that my world and way of thinking can be shown.“
