About the teacher
Mezzo-soprano Esther Pierweijer studied singing at the conservatoires of Enschede, Rotterdam and Cologne, where she was taught by Anne Haenen, Dieter Schweikart and Jard van Nes. She subsequently received coaching from baritone Matthias Goerne and Sasja Hunnego.
Esther has performed opera and musical theatre roles in the Netherlands and abroad, including Carmen, Orfeo, Suor Angelica, Maria de Buenos Aires and Merrily We Roll Along. She has appeared in show productions such as Musicals in Concert, Musicals in Ahoy, East Meets West in Hong Kong, Van Scala tot Musical and the dinner shows at Studio 21. She has also appeared as an actress in television series including Van Jonge Leu en Oale Groond, Malaika, De Leeuwenkuil, Gerede Twijfel and Woeste Grond.
While still a student, she won several prizes, including awards at the International Competition for Contemporary Music in Weimar and from Stichting Jong Muziektalent Nederland. The Wagner Society of the Netherlands awarded her a scholarship, which enabled her to attend the Bayreuth Festival.
As a soloist, she has worked with conductors including Maurice Luttikhuis, Jiggs Whigham, Alexander Vakoulsky, Nicolai Alexeev, Kenneth Montgomery and Jaap van Zweden. She has performed with ensembles and orchestras including the New Symphonic Orchestra, Orkest van het Oosten, Het Gelders Orkest, the Metropole Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Guangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra. She also works as a freelance choral singer and has performed at various festivals, including those dedicated to contemporary music.
Alongside her performing career, Esther works as a singing teacher and vocal coach. She teaches at ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede, Rijn IJssel College’s Musical Performer programme, Musical 2.0 and Mediacollege Amsterdam. She is also a vocal coach on The Voice of Holland and The Voice Kids. Her previous vocal coaching credits include Op zoek naar Danny & Sandy, I Can See Your Voice, All Together Now, The Masked Singer and The Talent Project.
