'During mastering, we're still talking about music... hey?'
About the teacher
I’m Erwin Maas, a mastering engineer and founder of eMastering in Arnhem. For more than 25 years, I’ve enjoyed working with artists, producers and labels from the Netherlands and abroad to bring out the best in their music. Every week, I bring that hands-on experience into the classroom.
For me, mastering is much more than the final step in a production. It’s about learning to listen differently: listening objectively from the perspective of a mastering engineer. It’s not just about hearing what’s happening technically, but above all about understanding what the music needs and how you can strengthen it through both technical and creative choices.
With this in mind, I developed the Minor Mastering for ArtEZ MediaMusic in Enschede. You’ll work hands-on in my mastering studios, where analogue equipment and digital workflows complement each other. But just as importantly, you’ll learn how to apply this way of listening and working to your own productions. Once you learn to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of a mix more clearly, you naturally start making better choices – long before mastering even comes into play.
My aim is not only to introduce you to the world of mastering, but above all to teach you to listen to and look at music differently. This will help you grow as a producer, mixer and musician.
