Specific admission criteria for Accordion

In addition to the general admission criteria, there are also specific admission criteria for each instrument. You will prepare five pieces which differ somewhat in character and pace. These pieces can be in the style(s) of your choice, so you can play any form of jazz, latin or pop music, or a mix of these styles. During the audition, you will perform a maximum of three of the five prepared pieces. You are preferably accompanied by your own band or, if that is impossible, by students of the Academy of Music.

Important aspects that may be included in the audition and will also be taken into account during the evaluation phase:

  • Of the prepared pieces, there should be at least three jazz standards or works of jazz accordionists to be played, such as A French Touch, Nuages or Bluesette, supplemented by pop, tango, own compositions or other repertoire. At least two of the five prepared pieces are to be performed with a rhythm section;
  • Following a brief preparation, improvising on a given chord progression with consciously selected harmonic and melodic material;
  • Aspects, which the committee will take into consideration during the entrance exam, comprise: command of your instrument and posture, improvisation, phrasing, articulation, tone production, dynamics, interpretation, performing with others, timing and tempo;
  • It is not necessary to perform on a free bass accordion, but desired.
