During the course, you will learn how to systematically create an architectural design.
Together, design and construction are the pillars of the programme. You will learn which parties and stakeholders are involved in the design process. You will be trained to form your own opinion. This will give you the tools necessary to fulfil your role as the creator of the design and director of the implementation process. After the third year, you can opt for the Architecture in Context specialisation.
ArtEZ Academy of Architecture - introduction
The in-school curriculum consists of the following:
There are four design exercises (material, space, context, integrated) in the first year, which together form the Design Lab (16 ECTS). In the second and third years, there are long (15 weeks) and short (7 weeks) design workshops followed by mixed groups of students. Each year, the study weighting for the design workshops is 16 ECTS.
The lecture and exercise curriculum is related to a particular year. In the first academic year, the emphasis is on the basic skills (Drawing, Documenting, Publishing) and lectures (Urban Planning, Landscaping, History of Architecture, Cultural Considerations). In the second and third year, the lectures will go into further depth, partially attributable to Building Analysis in the second year and Research Skills in the third year. On average, the study load per semester is 4 ECTS.
The extracurricular programme consists of excursions, which are planned in spring, and the Plein January programme. Plein consists of workshops organised around a different theme every year. Every academic year is concluded with a closing weekend. In recent years, these weekends were spent in cities such as Strasbourg, Lyon and Manchester. The average study weighting per year is 4 ECTS.
The fourth year of the study curriculum is entirely devoted to the graduation project. Much space is given to designing your own graduation project. You will choose your mentor and adapt your subject, design methods and processes to the subject of your choice. The progress of your graduation project will be measured with interim presentations. An assessment committee will be present for the final presentation of the graduation project. The graduation project has a study load of 30 ECTS. Practice curriculum In addition to the study curriculum, there is also a practice curriculum. This consists of relevant work in professional practice. During the programme, your development will be tracked with practice portfolios and peer reviews. You will earn 30 ECTS each year for this portion.
