The NICU training 'First Sounds: Rhythm, Breath and Lullaby' focuses on music therapy for premature and critically ill infants and their families in the hospital’s neonatal unit.
The ArtEZ Academy of Music combines music therapy with Music & Medicine and explores new areas within the field of music therapy.
The Music Therapy program is therefore making the NICU training (Neonatology Intensive Care Unit training) available to music therapists in the Netherlands and Europe to give a boost to the use and development of music therapy within medical care, and specifically within hospital care, neonatology, and intensive care.
This year, both the NICU Tier 1 and Tier 2 courses will take place from Friday, November 13, through Sunday, November 15, 2026, at the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede.
Please note: Both courses are held simultaneously, so it is not possible to participate in both courses during this single weekend.
This NICU First Sounds—Rhythm, Breath & Lullaby training is based on music psychotherapy and is led by Dr. Joanne Loewy and her multidisciplinary team, consisting of Dr. Andrew Rossetti, Dr. Aimee Telsey, and Ann-Marie Dassler. Participants will be trained in evidence-based applications of live music interventions for premature and critically ill infants, their families, and their care environment, and will practice experiential musical interventions within this treatment model.
The course is conducted in English.
