Ainoa Gonzalez Rabanal | ArtEZ finals

17:00 tot 18:00
Wolweverstraat 9, 8011 NW Zwolle

My final exam explores the relationship between music and human connection, focusing on audience interaction and the emotional impact of performance. Throughout this academic year, I have been experimenting with different forms of audience participation, researching how music can transform the way people feel, think and connect with each other. As part of this process, I also interviewed professionals working in interdisciplinary and interactive artistic fields.

The central question of the exam is: “What is music to you?”

At different moments during the performance, the audience will answer this question using only one word through an interactive digital platform. By comparing these answers throughout the concert, the project reflects on how music can change our emotions and perspectives in the space of a single hour.

The program presents different ways of experiencing music. It begins with Prokofiev’s Sonata in a traditional concert format, followed by Voice by Toru Takemitsu, accompanied by projected poetry (own poem) connected to the piece, creating an introspective and personal atmosphere.

Another important moment of the performance is an own arrangement of Rest is Memory for flute, strings, piano and harp. During this piece, a video showing fragments of my own life journey will be projected, inviting the audience to reflect on their own paths and personal decisions through the question: “This is my path until now. What is yours?”

The final part of the program moves towards collective participation and celebration. A flamenco piece with guitar and cajón invites the audience to join through rhythmic hand clapping, while the last salsa piece (with a pop band) includes projected lyrics and small percussion instruments for anyone who wishes to participate actively in the performance.

Through this project, I aim to break the traditional barrier between performer and audience, transforming the concert into a shared emotional experience and highlighting the power of music to unite people, provoke reflection and create change.
