Practicing Criticality

  • Research

Practicing Criticality is a collaboration between the MA Critical Fashion Practices and the and the Fashion Professorship. During this three-day event, we will jointly work from the question ‘What is critical practice?’. We will explore different methods of critical practice, such as self-publishing, writing, embodiment, (auto)ethnography, making as critical practice, etc.

Practicing Criticality

to map out the field of critical practice

We are driven by an urgency to map out the field of critical practice, which, as a discourse, is still somewhat in its infancy. What is critical practice? And what does it mean to be a critical practitioner? Where do these practices exist? And how does criticality differ per discipline?

Working from the main question What is critical practice? we will explore several methods of critical practice, such as self-publishing, writing, embodying, (auto)ethnography, making as critical practice, etc.

The event will be spread over three days, with the first day focusing on exploring critical practice (see programme of DAY 1 below). On the second and third day, we will collectively work on reflecting on these interactions and channeling this into writings, imagery, mappings, and other formats. This material is then to be edited and published in a small-scale publication, preferably designed by a critical graphic design practitioner.

programme day 1
wednesday 4 December 2024 10:00-17:00

On the first of the three days of Practicing Criticality, we will be joined by several critical practitioners: Alina Lupu, Floriane Misslin, Farida Sedoc, and Bronwen Jones and Dasha Golova (of Textile Initiative). Together, we will explore critical practice through presentations, sharing sessions, short workshops, and dialogues. This “symposium-but-not-really” will serve as the base for further explorations and reflections on the second day, and eventually will lead towards a small-scale publication developed on the third day.

We would love to engage with other students at ArtEZ, outside of our Critical Fashion Practices Learning Community. You can sign up for the “symposium-but-not-really” on December 4th via the form on this page. Deadline for application is 20 November 2024.

Please note that space is limited, and that signing up would require your presence for the full day. Lunch will be arranged.

If you’re interested in also joining the other days, please reach out via ch.bugter@artez.nl

Overall, the aim of this event is to explore the field of critical practice, and how this relates to a variety of disciplines. We also hope this can lead to a connection to not only other elements and programmes within ArtEZ, but also enlarge the scope of critical practice outside of the walls of the institute.
