Why choose the international Master Artist Educator (iMAE)?

Enable sustainable, social change

Develop your skills, capacities and knowledge to enable sustainable social change based on mutual respect for self and other.

A community of passionate artisteducators

You will be part of a diverse international learning community that shares your passion for using art to enable positive societal change.

Work on site, with different communities

You will work on site at residencies in the Netherlands and in Northern Ireland, and team up with artists and cultural workers from communities most affected by social or cultural marginalisation.

Act locally and globally

Connect your interests and talents to social issues of local and global importance.

Artivism as activism

You will promote creative action through artistic research, and use your artistic practice as a tool for social change.

Put theory to practice

You become a unique practitioner and will be a leading agent in the combined field of Socially Engaged Art and Issues Based Arts Education.

What it means to be an artisteducator

As a master's student at iMAE, you will not become an art teacher or a teacher of art. Instead, you will become an artisteducator. Your aim will be to challenge negative narratives of cultural difference, promote diversity, and address complex societal issues as a cultural worker.

As an artisteducator, your artistic work will focus on learning and meaning-making. This emphasis on learning and creating meaning will enable you to explore your identity and connect your passions to the current state of the world.

To co-create a new generation of artists who develop their skills, capacities and knowledge to enable sustainable social change.
JOHN JOHNSTON, head of iMAE

Working with and for the community

The international Master Artist Educator is about ‘working with’; be this with your own community or with various groups and individuals in Site Specific Colleges. As a student, you are responsible for being open-minded and proactive and working professionally with anyone who requires your presence, whether in the public or private sector. You will work with artists, non-artists, teachers, students, NGOs, and policymakers. Upon graduation from iMAE, you become part of a global movement committed to redefining art education to meet the demands of our world better.

Based on the student evaluations included in the independent Keuzegids Masters 2024, this master's course receives an above-average score for the components 'atmosphere' and 'preparation for the career'.
