The course
The Music Therapy programme trains you in the following:
- musical skills. About 45% of the programme consists of musical training: music theory and skills/artistique training
- medical knowledge and health-related subjects
- scientific focus.
During the Music Therapy programme, you receive broad musical training. You are expected to be able to play and use a number of instruments, including your own voice. You will obtain lessons in piano, singing and percusion and also in your own instrument. Classical music, jazz, pop and world music are all dealt with here. Also musical improvisation plays an important role, both in the music subjects and in the subjects ‘Methodology’ and ‘Self-experience’. The subject ‘Music Theory’ teaches you to view and to create music from the different theoretical perspectives.
In your future profession, you will need therapeutic knowledge and skills. Music Therapy teaches you to use music as a tool for change, stabilisation, acceptance and development. You follow subjects such as Methodology, Music Psychology and Self-experience as well as various subjects on health-related issues. And you familiarise yourself with your future work environment by doing various intensive internships. As part of Self-experience, a unique part of the programme, you receive supervision from an independent registered supervisor from outside the ArtEZ School of Music.
There are three specialisations: Neurological Music Therapy (NMT), Mental Health Care (GGZ) and Orthopaedic Music Therapy (OPMT). The Music Therapy course and the Music in Education course work together regularly, for instance, during the Improvisation Week and in specific projects.
The Music Therapy study programme is not based on one single therapy, but focuses on the different trends that are used most frequently in the field. It starts from the premise that musical behaviour and experiences, as made visible through music therapy, are comparable to people’s general behaviour and experiences in everyday life. The focus here on the most important orthopaedic and psychotherapeutic music therapy methods teaches you to develop a music therapy method that is based on methodical models and individually suited to each client or group.
