The focus in the Jazz & Pop study programme is on developing your musicality and gaining complete mastery of your instrument. You can specialise in instrumental and vocal skills, or choose courses in arranging, autonomous composing or composing for film and theatre.
At Jazz & Pop, you design a large portion of your programme yourself. As you progress through the programme, you are given an increasing degree of freedom to choose your own direction. All three locations offer a broader training as well as different specialisations, each focused on a different selection of music styles.
In music, much attention is given to developing cultural entrepreneurship, acquiring teaching skills and playing in ensembles. Students at all three locations perform frequently, in the ArtEZ concert halls, on the stages of our partners and at festivals.
In the first year, everyone follows the same programme. During this time, you develop yourself more broadly and look beyond the musical styles that you are familiar with.
In the second year, you draw up your own plan: you can choose a substantial number of the subjects yourself, and you decide which style to focus on in these subjects.
The compulsory part of the programme in the last two years includes your main subject, band coaching and a minor, a combination which very clearly reflects your desired direction. The band coaching takes place with a band that you form together with other students in your programme. This band reflects all aspects of professional reality: you rehearse together, perform together at concerts and spend a few days each year in a professional recording studio. Most bands record demos or even entire CDs, and often stay together until well after their ArtEZ School of Music training!
Recurring parts of the study programme include the annual ensemble week, the wisselweek (where ArtEZ teachers teach each other’s classes), the instrument2daagse and master classes (which are from time to time attended by world-famous artists such as Marcus Miller or Gino Vannelli).
