Michiel Braam, head Jazz & Pop:
"
The boundaries between jazz and pop are flexible and dynamic. Interaction between the two can lead to new musical styles."

The Jazz & Pop study programme reflects this interaction. Students learn about music, and about the ins and outs of their instrument, but they choose the genre for a large part themselves: There are students who specialise in all kinds of jazz and pop styles, such as bebop, hardrock, dubstep, free improvisation, Latin or fusion.

Others choose to become more all-round musicians. The programme’s objective is for students to choose from these options as they develop their own musical personality. The ArtEZ School of Music offers a wide range of minors that make personalised and innovative combinations possible.

Masterclass piano and drums by John Beasley & Robby Ameen. On double bass lector Henk de Ligt.

Jazz & Pop is taught at all three ArtEZ locations, but each programme has a different focus. This gives students a wide range of options.

  • Find here more information about the differences in focus

Students work together at all conceivable levels, resulting in crossovers between Jazz & Pop, Classical Music, Music Theatre and MediaMusic. Projects take on an interdisciplinary nature as students of music, theatre, visual arts and dance meet. Students have the chance to attend concerts by top musicians, but also play themselves, for instance during the Grolsch International Jazz Festival in Enschede.
